The revised Vesik method involves typing nonsense characters into a password input box when using a public PC and then rearranging some of the letters to form your actual password with the mouse. If the PC contains a hardware keylogger or is infected with a software keylogger, rearranging a password in this way will usually suffice to obscure your credentials. Most hackers will concentrate on the 99% of users who type in their passwords at Internet cafés in the usual way.

One proposal sent in by many, many, many readers was a variation on a single theme. Namely, keep your sign-in information on a USB flash drive or memory stick, then copy and paste the info into the appropriate fields when you’re required to use a public PC or other unsecured computer.

Unfortunately, many keyloggers capture any information you place into the Windows Clipboard. I tested the copy-and-paste technique using the All In One Keylogger from RelyTec. (For more info, see the vendor’s site.) The program easily captured the sign-in IDs and passwords entered, whether I used the standard menu options (Edit, Copy and Edit, Paste) or the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.

In my tests, the All In One Keylogger wasn’t able to capture the information when I performed a copy-paste operation using a context (right-click) menu. But that’s not much to rest one’s hopes on. Other keyloggers do succeed at capturing data copied via context-menu options.

Other strategies for blocking keyloggers

Readers suggested various ways of carrying one’s passwords on a flash drive. Jeff H. asked, for example:

* “What about surfing from suspect PCs using only Firefox Portable running off a USB drive, with all your passwords stored in the browser?”

If you store passwords in a portable version of Firefox, make sure you set a “master password” first. This encrypts your passwords so they’re not readable on the USB device for any malware to scan.

To establish a master password in Firefox, pull down the Tools menu, click Options, select the Security tab, and turn on Use a master password. After doing this, you must enter your master password once per browser session.

Another reader, Val Ingraham, proposed signing in using a tool such as the portable version of Siber Systems’ free RoboForm password manager, available on the company’s download page.

Both of these approaches were able to evade the keylogger I tested them with and would likely confound other keyloggers as well.

However, any method that permits automatic sign-in from a flash drive poses a risk of physical security. A flash drive is easy to lose. When you misplace one, you could be handing over your passwords to whoever finds the device if you don’t enable a master password.

Can freeware provide the privacy you need?

Several readers like products that are specifically designed to defeat keyloggers. Simon Bleasdale recommends Neo’s SafeKeys 2008, available for free on the Alpin Software site. The program promises the same functionality as the Windows On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) utility described in the original tip but without OSK’s security risks.

(OSK sends keystrokes in a way that keyloggers can see and record. To use OSK if you need it for entering something other than a password, open the software by clicking Start, All Programs, Accessories, Accessibility, On-Screen Keyboard.)

Neo’s SafeKeys 2008 displays a small window with a simulated keyboard on which you can type your sign-in, password, and other information just as with OSK. But unlike the Microsoft utility, Neo’s SafeKeys 2008 doesn’t transmit information in a way that can be picked up by keyloggers. Nor does the program use the Clipboard. Instead, you type your info in the SafeKeys 2008 window and then drag the data to the appropriate text box in your browser.

Neo’s SafeKeys 2008 successfully evaded the All In One Keylogger product in my tests. Other options help you foil keyloggers that regularly take screen captures to record your PC activities. According to the Alpin Software site, however, the utility’s drag-and-drop methods don’t work with all products including the Opera browser.

No product will ever be able to guarantee your safety from snoops when you use a public computer. Fortunately, the techniques and products described here and in the previous article can reduce your risk substantially.

You’re the only person, however, who can decide what constitutes an acceptable risk level for your data. That may mean never signing in to Web sites using PCs at Internet cafés or wherever you’re not sure adequate security precautions have been taken.

According to the Redmond-based company, the refreshed DirectX 11 release brings to the table the RTM version of Direct3D. Essentially, what it is offering is an update for the DirectX software development kit. Developers are free to grab the SDK via the Microsoft Download Center since September 8, 2009.

“The August 2009 DirectX SDK contains the first official release of the DirectX developer resources for Direct3D 11, DXGI 1.1, Direct2D, and DirectWrite. Developers can now publish and distribute Direct3D 11 applications and games that leverage all of the software and hardware features of DirectX 11 in Windows 7 and Windows Vista,” Microsoft noted. “ll headers, import libraries, and symbol files (.pdb files) are no longer marked as beta with the ‘_beta’ suffix and now link to the RTM versions of the runtimes. In addition, the HLSL compiler features for Direct3D 11 are now of release quality. The beta DLLs are no longer available in the DirectX SDK.”

With the August 2009 DirectX Software Development Kit update, Microsoft is offering developers the new Effects runtime for Direct3D 11. Devs will be able to access Effects 11 via its two parts, namely the D3DCompiler library and FXC. Microsoft underlined the fact that both components come with support for the new fx_5_0 target. Details on Effects 11 are available via the associated API documentation (Effect System Interfaces (Direct3D 11)).

“Features of this new target include support for all Direct3D 11 features such as hull shaders, domain shaders, interfaces, and DirectCompute, as well as grouping of techniques within a single Effect file using the fxgroup keyword. Please refer to the documentation for more information (Effects (Direct3D 11)). The Effects 11 runtime is provided as source in the Utilities directory, including Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 projects for building the runtime into a library for use in applications. Features include effect cloning for multithreaded operation, the new shader stages, unordered access views, interfaces, and extended user-defined state control,” the company stated.

In addition, the August 2009 DirectX 11 SDK offers a variety of new and enhanced samples for developers to leverage. The update introduces: Basic Samples, Shadow Techniques, Compute Shader, Tessellation, BC6H/BC7 Texture Compression, DDS File Format, Direct3D 10.1, Windows 7 Touch Messages, and Games for Windows Showcase S.6 (Direct3D 10 Sample).

“Included in the August 2009 DirectX SDK is the D3DCSX library, which includes new technologies for utilizing DirectCompute for advanced processing on the GPU. This first version includes implementations of scan and Fast-Fourier transform that utilize Direct3D 11 capable GPUs. Scan is a data-parallel algorithm for fast calculation of averages, sums, min, max, and other values from large data sets. The Fast-Fourier transform provides conversion from temporally sampled data to frequency information,” Microsoft added.

August 2009 DirectX Software Development Kit is available for download here.

Microsoft has made available for download the gold version of its solution accelerator designed to automate the deployment of its latest Windows client and server operating system released. The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2010 was released to manufacturing over a month following the RTM of Windows 7 itself. MDT 2010 comes to the table with support not just for the deployment of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, but also for previous releases of Windows, including Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP.

“MDT provides you with the following benefits: unified tools and processes required for desktop and server deployment in a common deployment console and collection of guidance. Reduced deployment time and standardized desktop and server images, along with improved security and ongoing configuration management. Fully automated Zero Touch Installation deployments by leveraging System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 Release Candidate and Windows deployment tools. For those without a System Center Configuration Manager 2007 infrastructure, MDT leverages Windows deployment tools for Lite Touch Installation deployments,” Keith Combs, Microsoft evangelist, revealed.

The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 is designed to take advantage of a package composed of several Windows deployment solutions. Customers will be able to install the solution acclelerator and, after firing up the Deployment Workbench, automatically download and install additional components, including the Windows Automated Installation Kit, the Application Compatibility Toolkit and MSXML 6.0.

“Improvements to the newest version of MDT allow you to: access deployment shares from anywhere on the network and replicate files and settings across organizational boundaries or sites. Organize and manage drivers, operating systems, applications, packages, and task sequences with an improved UI. Automate UI functionality using the Windows PowerShell command line interface,” Combs added.

The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 5.0 is available for download X64 OR X86.

The Windows 7 RTM Enterprise 90-Day Evaluation is available for download here

Windows 7 General Availability will in just a few days be only two months away and Microsoft is laboring to catalyze the adaptation of the ecosystem of hardware and software solutions orbiting Windows to the latest iteration of the platform. In this regard, the Redmond-based company has supplied developers with the RTM bits of Windows 7 via MSDN, but has also offered the developer resources necessary to tailor apps to the operating system.

But the Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is not the only software development kit for Windows 7. At the end of the past week, the Windows Media Center Software Development Kit for Windows 7 went live on the Microsoft Download Center.

“This release includes documentation, tools, sample code. The Windows Media Center SDK is designed to help developers create applications and software components that take advantage of features provided by Windows Media Center, and documents programming technologies that you can use to extend the capabilities of Windows Media Center,” Microsoft stated.

This is in fact version 6 of the Windows Media Center SDK, which is designed especially for Windows 7 RTM. Basically, developers will only be able to leverage the SDK in order to build applications taking advantage of the Windows 7-specific Media Center application programming interfaces. Windows Media Center SDK v6 limits application support to Windows 7 and the OS’ specific API set, without providing developers with a seamless backporting process that would make their programs play nice with Windows Vista.

Unlike Vista, there are three main editions of Windows 7 that feature Windows Media Center. Because Windows 7 SKUs are superseding one another, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate (Enterprise for business users) will all feature Windows Media Center. In Vista, the software giant only offered Windows Media Center with the Home Premium and Ultimate editions of the operating system.

Windows Media Center Software Development Kit (SDK) 6 for Windows 7 RTM is available for download here.

Following the release of the gold build of Windows 7 via MSDN and TechNet, Microsoft has now made available for download Windows 7 Code Pack 1.0. Version 1.0 of the Windows API Code Pack for Microsoft .NET Framework is designed to integrate with the RTM release of Windows Vista’s successor. Subscribers of both MSDN and TechNet can already download and install the final version of Windows 7 since the end of the past week. Now developers looking to start building applications for Windows 7 RTM can also grab Windows API Code Pack for Microsoft .NET Framework, but without the restrictions set in place by the MSDN or TechNet subscriptions.

“The Windows API Code Pack for Microsoft .NET Framework provides support for various features of Windows 7 and previous releases of that operating system. The Code Pack has reached version 1.0 and has been published on Code Gallery,” revealed Charlie Calvert, Microsoft C# community program manager.

According to Microsoft, Windows 7 RTM Code Pack 1.0 “provides a source code library that can be used to access some new Windows 7 features (and some existing features of older versions of Windows operating system) from managed code. These Windows features are not available to developers today in the .NET Framework.”

Developers already familiar with the Code Pack will be able to leverage new additions to the version 1.0 release tailored to Windows 7 RTM. Essentially, with v1.0 of the Code Pack, Microsoft introduced Shell Search API support; Drag and Drop functionality for Shell objects; support for Direct3D and Direct2D interoperability; support for Typography and Font enumeration DirectWrite APIs. On top of the new features, the Redmond company has also brought to the table bug fixes, performance enhancements, new samples as well as improved reference documentation for the application programming interface.

Developers will need NET Framework version 3.5 SP1 and Windows 7 RTM in order to take advantage of the Windows API Code Pack for Microsoft .NET Framework.

Calvert also enumerated some of the features supported by this release:

- Windows 7 Taskbar Jump Lists, Icon Overlay, Progress Bar, Tabbed Thumbnails, and Thumbnail Toolbars

- Windows 7 Libraries, Known Folders, non-file system containers

- Windows Shell Search API support, a hierarchy of Shell Namespace entities, and Drag and Drop functionality for Shell Objects

- Explorer Browser Control

- Shell property system

- Windows Vista and Windows 7 Common File Dialogs, including custom controls

- Windows Vista and Windows 7 Task Dialogs

- Direct3D 11.0, Direct3D 10.1/10.0, DXGI 1.0/1.1, Direct2D 1.0, DirectWrite, Windows Imaging Component (WIC) APIs. (DirectWrite and WIC have partial support)

- Sensor Platform APIs

- Extended Linguistic Services APIs

- Power Management APIs

- Application Restart and Recovery APIs

- Network List Manager APIs

- Command Link control and System defined Shell icons.

Redmond-based software giant Microsoft made available the release candidate flavor of Windows 7’s XP Mode add-on on Tuesday. The beta iteration of XP Mode was released on May 6, along with the beta variant of Windows Virtual PC, and the RC version comes as another step the company is taking towards launching the final iteration of the add-on. The new flavor has been designed to work both on the Windows 7 Release Candidate and on final Windows 7 RTM variants.

When available, starting October 22, Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate will run the final version of XP Mode, as Microsoft plans on releasing it around the same time. The new RC iteration includes a copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3, 450 MB in size, along with a Windows Virtual PC file of 5 MB. The XP Mode enables Windows 7 users to run Windows XP applications on Windows 7, and has been designed mainly for small/mid-size business users.

Scott Woodgate, director of Windows Enterprise and Virtualization Strategy, ZDNet reports, showed the tweaks Microsoft included in the new RC flavor of the add-on, such as an easier way to access devices from XP Mode, including USB drives or printers. The process now features fewer steps, and clicking on the Windows 7 icon will enable users to add devices. At the same time, there is a better integration with Windows 7.

Another new feature that XP Mode RC comes with is “Turn off and discard changes,” which will appear when turning off a virtual machine in case the Undo disk option is enabled. In addition, a Windows XP Mode RC tutorial has also been included in the package, and it will run during the setup process of the XP Mode. File sharing between XP Mode and Windows 7 has been improved as well.

Interestingly enough, it seems that Microsoft also made up its mind when it comes to the pricing of XP Mode. According to ZDNet, the software giant said the following in this regard: “Customers purchasing the Pro/Ultimate and Enterprise SKUs will get access to Windows XP Mode as part of their purchase. If someone has a valid license of XP to run in VMs, then they can just use that license instead of Windows XP mode. We do provide a RAIL QFE for Windows XP SP3 to have the integration features with Windows Virtual PC. (RAIL QFE are the integration components required for XP and Vista virtual machines to run corresponding apps on the Win7 desktop. XP Mode already has the RAIL QFEs installed and Win7 has them natively).”

The disclosure of a back door allowing bad guys to repeatedly guess Gmail passwords should remind us all to protect our accounts with long and strong character strings.

There’s a straightforward way to protect your online accounts use signin phrases that are easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess.

The latest vulnerability affecting Gmail accounts was recently revealed by security researcher Vicente Aguilera Díaz in a posting on the Full Disclosure security list. (Aguilera previously revealed a Gmail flaw known as session-riding, which Google subsequently fixed, as reported by WS contributing editor Scott Spanbauer)

According to Aguilera’s new security alert, Google allows anyone with a Gmail account to guess another Gmail user’s password 100 times every two hours, or 1,200 times per day. No “captcha” keeps hacker bots from guessing passwords in this way. Worst of all: If a hacker controls, say, 100 Gmail accounts, 120,000 guesses can be made per day. Because Gmail accounts are free, many hackers control far more than 100 accounts, of course.

To its credit, Gmail requires fairly long passwords of 8 characters or more. However, as Aguilera points out, Gmail allows users to create extremely weak passwords such as aaaaaaaa.

A quick survey of my friends and relatives revealed that not one of them uses strong passwords. Most people have no idea how to create them. Yet everyone I asked expressed guilt at using easy-to-crack passwords: pet names, birthdays, and common dictionary words.

Most people’s passwords could be guessed in far fewer than 10,000 attempts. And, despite using weak passwords, the people I interviewed say they rarely change their signin strings. (One-third of the people surveyed use the same password for every Web site they sign in to, and the infamous Conficker worm needed to try only 200 common passwords to break into many systems, according to an analysis by the Sophos security firm.)

Here’s the topper: many respondents to my informal survey admitted to keeping an unencrypted file on their systems that lists every password they use!

You may not think the password to your webmail account is valuable. But anyone with access to your account can use it to send spam and ruin your online reputation. More seriously, you may have entered the same password at an online banking site, such as PayPal, or a site where your credit-card number is stored for easy ordering, such as Amazon.

An integral part of the Software Assessment Management efforts from Microsoft, the Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer 5.1 is available for download accompanied by a range of resources designed to streamline usage. MSIA is a tool designed to permit customers to scan either a local machine or computers connected to a network in order to identify and produce a report containing a list of core Microsoft software products installed. In addition to MSIA, the company is also offering for download documentation containing a User Guide and a FAQ. According to the Redmond giant, MSIA is capable of putting together software inventories only for networks with a maximum of 250 computers.

“MSIA reports the results of the scan in three possible formats, based on the user’s selection: HTML, Excel, and Text. These reports contain details such as the names of all the installed Microsoft products, links to the list of computers scanned, links to the error log, and so on. In addition, the summary report enables users to enter corresponding license purchase information for all software detected in the scan,” Microsoft revealed.

In order to put together the software inventory of specific computers, MSIA will only scan the registry information of Windows operating systems. In this regard, the Redmond company indicated that there was no interference with the systems themselves or the programs running on the scanned machines. With this tool, all software featured under the Add or Remove Programs section of Control Panel will be reported, as long as the products belong to Microsoft.

“MSIA 5.1 is several times faster than its earlier versions. This high performance was achieved by removing the hard disk scanning method. The latest version is using only the registry scanning method to detect all products,” the company noted. “With MSIA 5.1, you do not have to visit Microsoft Anti-Piracy Web site to know about any updates on MSIA. The Auto Update feature in this version will prompt you to download any updates.”

Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer 5.1 is available for download here.

Come June 23rd, 2009, Microsoft will open up codename Morro, its upcoming free security solution designed to replace Windows Live OneCare 2.0, to the public. The Redmond company offered official confirmation that codename Morro had been rebranded as Microsoft Security Essentials, and that the first Beta for version 1.0 was ready to debut next week. Access to Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 Beta will be granted to testers in the United States, Brazil and Israel, the software giant informed. The information provided by Microsoft comes after screenshots of Morro made it into the wild, followed by the actual bits, leaked a couple of days ago.

“The Microsoft Security Essentials Beta will be made publicly available in Brazil, Israel and the U.S. starting June 23 at about 9am PDT from www.microsoft.com/security_essentials, and general availability is scheduled for later this calendar year,” a Microsoft spokesman told pctipsbox.

Microsoft Security Essentials is just what the company promised in November 2008, a lightweight, no-PC performance-impact, basic security solution, built on the core antimalware engine of Windows Live OneCare that will be made available for free to Windows users worldwide. The only catch is that the product will only integrate with genuine/non-pirated copies of Windows (passing Windows Genuine Advantage validation is mandatory). I have already said that this move defeats the purpose of targeting MSE at developing countries where users can’t afford to pay for fully fledged security suites. But I see Microsoft changing its strategy for MSE in the future in the same manner that it did for Internet Explorer 7, which also required the underlying platform to pass WGA.

There will be 32-bit and 64-bit versions of MSE 1.0 for Windows Vista and Windows 7, but only 32-bit for Windows XP SP2/SP3. Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 will bring to the table the backbone of Windows Live OneCare, stripped of all the management capabilities associated with the paid product. Microsoft indicated that MSE was in fact a superset of Windows Defender, its current free security offering for Windows.

“To address consumer demand for quality anti-malware protection that’s easy to get and doesn’t slow down system performance, Microsoft Security Essentials has been designed as a no-cost anti-malware solution that provides consumers with quality protection from threats including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. It will be offered directly from Microsoft and has been designed to be hassle-free and is focused on delivering quality protection that’s easy to use,” the Microsoft spokesman added.

With the Release Candidate Build 7100 development milestone available for download since May 5th, 2009, and Windows 7 making its way toward RTM, Microsoft is also planning to debut the Tech Guarantee Program, now labeled Microsoft’s ‘Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program’ associated with the operating system. The Redmond company offered a similar program for Windows Vista, and it is now planning to do the same for Windows 7, starting June 26th, 2009. The marketing initiative is designed to offer free upgrades from Windows Vista to Windows 7 for customers who will not wait for the next iteration of the Windows client.

Microsoft has failed to offer any details related to its Technical Guarantee Program for Windows 7, but TechARP revealed that the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program was planned for debut by the end of next month. PC manufacturer Acer has already begun promoting the initiative in Australia, by offering marketing materials advertising the debut of the program. “Beginning June 26, 2009, customers who purchase a qualifying ACER Vista-based PC will receive a comparable version of Windows 7 when available,” reads the message of a slip included with new purchased Acer computers.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program is designed to compensate eventual consumer trends to hold out from buying new computers and wait for the general availability of Windows 7 instead. The Redmond company, in partnership with OEMs, is working to convince users to buy new machines preloaded with Windows Vista and get a free upgrade to Windows 7 when the operating system will become available.

The only eligible Vista editions for the Upgrade Option Program are Home Premium, Business, and Vista Ultimate. The move will be made between equivalent SKUs, for example Vista Ultimate users will receive an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Windows XP is also included in the program, but only for Vista downgrades, essentially only if a Vista license is present.

32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 (Release Candidate) RC Build 7100.0.090421-1700 is available for download here.
