Checking Processor Speed
With so many different computer systems around now, many online memory shops like Crucial (www.crucial.com) and Kingston technology (www.kingston.com) offer to walk you through buying the correct chips for your particular system. As part of this process, you are usually asked to fill out an online form that specifies the make and the model of your computer, as well as the processor your machine uses.
You can check your computer’s processor and speed fairly quickly from within the operating system so that you have the information handy for your memory-shopping trip.
In most recent versions of Windows, you can get this information by going to the Start menu to the Control Panel area and opening the System icon. Click the General tab to see your computer’s processor type and speed, as well as the amount of memory currently installed and the version of Windows running.
(On Windows systems that group the control panels by category view, you can find the System control panel in the Performance and Maintenance or System and Maintenance area.)
On a Macintosh running the Mac OS X system, go to the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen and select About This Mac to see the system and processor information. Click the More Info button to see a detailed list of your Mac’s hardware and software components.
