Free Software, Handpicked for Nonprofits
Although there are many free and open-source applications out there, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could find an edited group of choice software all in one place?
Enter NGO-in-a-Box, a bundle of free and open-source tools specifically chosen with nonprofits’ interests in mind. Below, we’ll introduce you to NGO-in-a-Box and provide links to this free online toolkit.
The Open-Publishing Edition of NGO-in-a-Box is a toolkit of free and open-source software, tutorials, and guides for producing, publishing, and distributing content. The Open-Publishing Edition, produced by the Tactical Technology Collective in collaboration with iCommons, is aimed at small- to medium-sized nonprofits, independent media organizations, free culture creators, and grassroots journalists, with a particular emphasis on those in developing and transition countries.
The contents of the toolkit were selected by an editorial team made up of leading international practitioners working in do-it-yourself publishing, free culture, technology for social justice, and the development and deployment of free and open-source software.
The Open Publishing Box covers the following areas:
1. Desktop publishing
2. Graphic design, fonts, and image manipulation
3. Web publishing, including wikis, content management systems, and blogging
4. Citizen journalism and participatory media
5. Open content licensing and the commons
This edition goes hand-in-hand with the Audio/Video Edition of NGO-in-a-Box, creating a comprehensive peer-reviewed, tried-and-tested free and open-source multimedia toolkit for nonprofits, activists, and grassroots journalists.
