How to Double Firefox Speed

10. Notify Backoffcount
This option controls maximum number times content will do timer-based reflows. After this number has been reached, page will only reflow once it is finished downloading. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in about:config window and select New and then Integer from pop-up menu.

A. Enter content.notify.backoffcount in New integer value pop-up window and click OK.

B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 5 and click OK.

11. CONTENT SWITCH THRESHOLD
You can interact with a loading page when content.interrupt.parsing is set to true. When a page is loading, application has two modes: a high frequency interrupt mode and a low frequency interrupt mode. first one interrupts parser more frequently to allow for greater UI responsiveness during page load.

low frequency interrupt mode interrupts parser less frequently to allow for quicker page load. application enters high frequency interrupt mode when you move mouse or type on keyboard and switch back to low frequency mode when you had no activity for a certain amount time. This preference controls that amount time. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in about:config window and select New and then Integer from pop-up menu.

A. Enter content.switch.threshold in New integer value pop-up window and click OK.

B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 750000 and click OK.


12. NGLAYOUT INITIALPAINT DELAY
Mozilla applications render pages incrementally, they display what’s been received a page before entire page has been downloaded. Since start a page normally doesn’t have much useful information to display, Mozilla applications will wait a short interval before first rendering a page. This preference controls that interval. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in about:config window and select New and then Integer from pop-up menu.

A. Enter nglayout.initialpaint.delay in New integer value pop-up window and click OK.

B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 0 and click OK.

    I accidently selected “boolean” instead of “integer” for content.max.tokenizing.time. Is there anyway to delete or adjust it to “integer?”

    One of the changes screwed up my Firefox. My GMail link no longer operates unless I go into the HTML mode.

    How does one restore Firefox to its original default settings? I uninstalled Firefox and then re-installed, but it did not solve the problem.

    If you create an incorrect entry (boolean vs. integer), here’s how you remove it:
    1. Close Firefox
    2. Open your Firefox profile. In XP it’s in C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR LOGIN NAME]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[RANDOM CHARACTERS].default
    3. Make a backup of prefs.js (just in case you screw up the original)
    4. Open the original prefs.js in notepad & remove the offending entry.
    5. Save, open Firefox

    Great tips! It really speeds up Firefox significantly! So far I haven’t experienced any problems with the new configuration on my XP machine. It would be great if these settings could be the default setup, but I guess there can be problems on some systems and that’s why the Firefox team doesn’t use it. Perhaps it would be possible to make some sort of installer wizard (advanced mode) that could check the system and automatically make an optimum setup????
