Although Windows Vista is a major improvement over Windows XP, there is one particular bug that has really upset me which is how slowly it moves or deletes files. In Windows XP there were no problems moving big files. However, with Windows Vista if you move big files even on the same drive there is a long pause while it calculates how long it will take and the actual move takes forever, whereas on XP it is instanteneous.
Luckily, the How To Geek has discovered what the problem is and has come up with the solution for moving and copying large files in Vista. The problem is because of the new auto-tuning network. Once Vista is auto-tuning network is turned off, then the issue of moving files goes away.
To Turn off Auto-Tuning:
1. press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open the Command Prompt. Choose run as admin
type in: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
2. Reboot
If you have any problems, then to turn auto-tuning back on type the following in Command Prompt:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

I have tried all of the tweaks out there including this one on 2 machines and the crappy slow file copy/move/delete will not go away. MS are idiots for messing up such a basic function and even more arrogant to not provide a fix by now!
Tried the fix on 2 64bit vista ultimate machines and all it did was kill my connection to the domain. Vista SUCKS, I’m going back to XP64
my problem is more basic. Slowness is one thing but unless I’m set up incorrectly, I can’t find a “move’ choice on the left panel or by right clicking.
All I want to do is take a file and ‘move ‘ it elsewhere, but all I see if a ‘copy’ choice. Where the h—- is ‘move’?
guys how do i log in as admin on the command prompt. I am using vista home on amd turion notebook. every so often my cable internet would come to a halt and the ping result wud be “host unreachable” and then afetr a while it would start connecting again.
what the fuck is this really???
thanx

This is soooo amateur-like……I have disabled autotuning, but a 28 GB photo-folder still takes over an hour to copy to a external HDD.
Bill and Co suck…..Vista sucks even more….makes me rethink going for Win7, and instead I am gonna go back to XP….
I CANT DO IT !! i changed (the autotuning) by cmd BUT NOTHING !! I cant copy or cut some .mkv files (video files) that are larger than 4 GB .. I WANT TO MOVE THEM to my EXTERNAL DISC !! plz help. i tried this and i tried ROBOCOPY too BUT nothing! plz help
I got a better idea! Don’t use Vista or the newer candied up vista Win 7. Microsoft has lost any ability to produce a valuable OS that is stable and productive. There is nothing that XP cannot do that Vista or Win 7 can do. And if Vi$ta or Winblows 7 can do anything that XP can’t do then it usually is a useless feature or doesn’t work as advertised. Go belly up Micro$soft! Make way for ReactOS!
Thank you! This fix actually worked for me – don’t forget the reboot. Management mandated an “ugrade” from XP to Vista. What a huge mistake. There is nothing about Vista that any of us like and much that we loathe. We mourn our lost XP…
