How to use Your Apple iPod as a Hard Disk

1. Connect your to a .

5. For most models (excluding shuffle): Select “Enable disk use” or “Manually manage songs and ”. Either of them will allow you to use as a drive. Select the “Enable disk use” checkbox and set the Storage Allocation slider to indicate the space you want to be used by audio files and the space you want to be used for data files.

6. The disk icon appears on the desktop and in Finder windows, and in My in Windows. Double-click the icon and drag files to or from ’s window to copy them.

7. Make sure to eject before disconnecting it from your . The display will say “Do Not Disconnect when disk use is enabled” so you won’ forget.

Copy songs from to

With default settings, automatically copies the media in your library to your . When you use your as a hard disk, you can’ see the media copies to your in the Finder or My . Using the Finder or My , you can’ copy these media files from your back to or to any other .

The synchronization between your and your is one way: from to . The exception is the transfer Purchases feature, which allows you to restore purchased content to your from your .

If you’ve erased the library on your , there’s no way to use the Finder or My to copy the media from your to rebuild the library on your . One way is to encode the songs from your CD again, then sync your new library with . If you bought content from the Store and didn’ back them up, you won’ be able to download them again. You’ll have to buy new copies.

Tips:
If you plan to connect to another , make sure not to sync it with the library on the other . This will only happen if you selected the Enable Disk Use option instead of manually managing music.

If you use your as a disk with a Windows PC, keep in mind that the FAT32 file system can only accommodate files that are smaller than 4 gigabytes. No matter how much free space there is on your , you can’ copy files that are larger than that.

    Why would I go through all this when I can just get a “Hitch” - the gadget that lets you transfer from any USB device to/from your iPod. It’s faster, simpler and it charges the iPod (or other device) on the go…..I know it costs $$…but it’s about $79 on the web, or around the same at Best Buy….not much more than a charger…
