Unless I'm missing some critical part of the "session" that you need to save, under "tools" "options" there is a drop-down box in the "main" area that allows you to decide whether you want your homepage(s) to load upon launching firefox, or if you want to have it re-open the tabs you were using the last time you closed it.

This is actually bad, I used to do it before and sometimes the restored sessions did not include my recently opened tabs. This is due to the fact that Firefox saves the session every once in a while.
Best Solution so far is the "Session Fix" add-on, it adds a third button "save session" when you want to close your Forefox, so you do not have to kill it.
You may download it from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4542
