released its first batch of Vista updates today along with two Ultimate Extras. In total, six updates to Vista were made available via Update. They are as follows:

  • KB930857: Install this update to fix an issue with Error Reporting that may cause some information about application errors to be sent to without notifying you. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
  • KB928089: This update resolves a performance issue with the Internet Explorer Phishing Filter when visiting web pages that contain multiple frames or when multiple frame navigations occur quickly.
  • KB929427: Install this update to address a set of known application compatibility issues with Vista.
  • KB929762: Install this update to resolve an issue which may cause the system to crash while resuming from hibernation while an IEEE 1394 hard drive is connected.
  • KB931573: Install this update to resolve an issue where you may be prompted to activate a pre-installed copy of Vista.
  • KB929735: Install this update to resolve an issue that prevents Search from returning a complete set of results when a search is performed using the date option and a non-Gregorian calendar is in use.

Ars previously reported on the two Ultimate Extras. The first Extra is Hold ‘Em Poker Game, which uses DirectX and allows you to gamble against up to five computer players. The second extra, BitLocker and EFS Enhancements, includes tools to make the technology easier to use. The BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool readies your hard drive so that it may be used with BitLocker, and the Secure Online Key Backup utility saves your BitLocker password and EFS recovery certificates to your digital locker (hosted by ).

The early updates for Vista confirm what Jim Allchin had said back in November—although Vista is RTM, will still continue to update the operating system. While the company risks receiving bad press by releasing fixes for Vista right before its consumer launch, it’s better that do it now rather than wait until some of the release hype recedes. Over the next few weeks, will likely send some more fixes down the Update pipe as consumers uncover new bugs. As long as the fixes are minor, the company should be in the clear, but if there’s an easily exploitable vulnerability, that could mean trouble. We won’t have to wait very long to find out.
