My Vista Installation Part 2

Posted on April 15th, 2007 by Jason

Well, as expected, I ran into some problems today, the first being driver-related (no surprise there). I have the Microtek Scanmaker 4900. Have they come out with Vista-compatible drivers yet? No sirree Bob. Not only that, but Vista does allow you to install the XP drivers. It’s just that once they are installed, they don’t work. Vista simply does not see the scanner. So you then have to uninstall it (well, you don’t have to, but there’s no point in having them installed).

Vista is so smart that it tells you what does and doesn’t work, right? So why didn’t it say that these would not work? It told me that the Creative drivers would not work and they did, and it didn’t tell me that the Microtek drivers wouldn’t work and they didn’t.

That is not good.

Then this popped up:

First of all, I already have the Lexmark and Creative drivers installed and working. It doesn’t need to tell me this. A newbie would think this meant that they are not installed and would likely go about reinstalling them, even though they are already installed. What’s up with that?

Second, I don’t even have Avast. I did, but I uninstalled it and installed NOD32 instead. So why is it telling me that Avast is not compatible? Not only that, but Avast is compatible. I had it installed and working fine.

Third, I have NOD32 and it is working. They have stated on their site that their newest version works with Vista. I installed the Vista version. So why is Vista telling me that it is not working? Vista is telling me that it has prevented NOD32 from working!!!

What on Earth is that about?

Does ESET know about this? That users who install their product are then told by Vista that their product has been prevented from working? A newbie would then uninstall it and go with another AV. And they would already have paid good money for it.

What is that about???
