msdos

If you try to run an old DOS game on Vista, you’ll probably get an error “This system does not support fullscreen mode.” Fortunately, this isn’t a dead end. Download a copy of DOSBox, the greatest MS-DOS emulator for any platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and more), and try running your game under DOSBox. Not only will you get support for old-school graphics like CGA and EGA, you can even run it in a window!

    Dosbos is bs.

I tired using it with my HP laptop. I found two problems almost immediately.

    1. Dosbox is not compatible with HP laptop keyboards. I had trouble just trying to type in a c:\ prompt and was unable to type in the backslash.

    2. I tried the mount command, and found out dosbox cannot find my lightscribe CD rom drive to do a mount. I’ve got dos games on CD, and would love to be able to play them again, but not with this program.

You are way better off getting ahold of a copy of partition magic, diggin up an old copy of MS dos, and doing a dual boot. Yeah, it’s a PITA rebooting your machine to play dos games, but hey it works flawlessly.

    Floyd Fisher,

HOW does running DosBox prevent you from typing a backslash??? Obviously, this is operator error, not a DosBox problem.

I Have DOS Box Installed but I am having trouble making it work. Please Help. I enjoy my DOS Games. I miss them not working as in 95, 98, Me, XP.

Explain the steps as if I were a child novice.

    Thanks

I, too, am having difficulties with this program. I am trying every key combination I can, but can not enter a backslash. My left bracket is a dead key while running DosBox, and my right bracket acts as a left bracket. My backslash key acts as a right bracket.

    Operator error? I think not.

I have Dosbox and when i try to run 11th hour 7th guest two game on it seems to run too fast on video parts and quality on video seems worst and just trying to get playing game right way without it being super quick which makes game looks horrible is there anyway to make it play the same way it did back in p166mhz days?

  10. sam says:

  11. Mark says:

    Same problems. DOSBox blows.

  12. Zorag says:

Almost 2 months and no helpful info. DOSBox meet the recycle bin.

    here’s an idea….

    GET VIRTUAL PC 2007

heres how to get around the errors

    1. get virtual pc 2007

    2. have dos (6.22 recommended) on floppies or cd-rom

for cd rom right click the cd icon and choose use

physical drive (*) * being you cd drive letter

    or use an iso

for an iso click on the cd icon find the iso and load it (iso only work 25% of the time)

for floppies click on the floppy disk icon and choose use drive (*) where * is your drive letter

    follow instructions and install dos

for cd-rom users only – you may need to manually install drivers for your cd rom

    1. on the internet find these files:

    1. oakcdrom.sys
    2. mscdex.exe

and any thing that can make floppy images

    2. open the floppy image maker

    3. use the 2 files and make a floppy image

    4. goto virtual pc and right click the floppy icon and choose use floppy image

after its done loading type in this

    c:\dir a:

to check and see if its working

then you need to do this:

(warning this could cause errors and you may need to reinstall dos)

    c:\edit autoexec.bat

    create a 5th line

    and type in this

    MSCDEX.EXE /M:10 /D:cdrom

    then save

back at the prompt type in this

    c:\edit config.sys

there should be a line that has this at the end

    =E

change it the E to Z

    create a line above DOS=HIGH

    type in this

    DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:CDROM

    then save

reboot your computer and you are done!

    have fun!

where do yu download it then???

  17. anon says:

Dosbox doesn’t suck. The keyboard bidings are for a normal 101 key US keyboard by default. RTFM and edit the config or use the keybinding sw. The issue is that it needs a lot of power. My atom N270 unit can’t quite run the games :(

Installing Dos or Win98 as a dualboot is a great idea if you have the luxury of getting sound, mouse and graphics drivers for the system, wich many units nowdays don’t have. Stupid thing they don’t support running DOS 16bit apps in vista and windows 7…

  18. Loui says:

Dosbox sucks,it slows down the dos application and the sound is way weird.

What whiney fags the future has turned geeks into. That’s not a god damned work-around. How hard is it to setup a 1-gig 6.22/3.11 partition and dual boot it? Problem solved lazyass. All my boxes boot OSX, debian, dos/3.11, os2 warp4, and vista. Not hard to do.

  20. Frusterated says:

I have dosbox, and am running the game through my E drive.
I would like to install it though and have vista. Everytime I try to install it, it says my computer does not have enough memory, but it has plenty.

  21. Sassy says:

I’m not a computer whiz, so if this seems easy to some of you that’s great. To me, not so much. I have no clue how to get my DOS game that I downloaded to play. Even after downloading and installing DOSBox… Help?

  22. Captain Cupcake says:

Seeing as many of you are having DOSbox issues, the following advice may help:

Backslashes don’t work- press CTRL+F1 and a keyboard should come up to allow you to modify what each key does. Press add on the selected key to change what the key does.

    Unable to run games:
First, find the folder you installed your game in (for example “C:\DOSGames\GrandPrix\”).
Secondly, type “mount c [insert name of folder the game is installed in]” and press enter
Thirdly, type “c:” and press enter.
Fourthly, find the name of the .exe file that runs the game (for example “gp.exe”) and type the name of the game (don’t forget to have “.exe” on the end) and press enter.
On a side note, if you have multiple DOS games in different folders, use the folder that links to the different game files for “mount c”, in this case “C:\DOSgames\” and after having typed and entered “C:” type “cd [insert name of game folder here]“, and press enter. Now you just do the fourth stage (find the .exe file) and press enter and you’ll be playing.
