Speed up slow file transfers on Windows Vista
A Windows Vista bug that is causing file transfer to slow down has been causing much frustration for many users. A discussion about this problem has been active on the Microsoft Support forums, which you can find here. Although this bug has been around for quite some time and is becoming a bigger problem each day, Microsoft has yet to issue a public release and will require you to contact them directly in order to receive the fix. You can find this bug listed in their database as entry KB931770 with details on symptoms and how to contact them.
However, I have found many other ways that will allow you to quickly fix this bug. I have ordered them from most likely to work for you to Å“least likely. Many who have encountered Windows Vista problems will know that one try is usually not enough.
Method 1 – Download the fix from somewhere else:
I have no idea why Microsoft would require you to contact them to get the fix. Who knows when they will reply to you. Luckily, Hotfix has the files for the fix available for download:
Method 2 – Use Total Commander:
A Neowin member claimed that this program managed to speed up file transfers. The program he used was called Total Commander, which can be downloaded here.
Using it is pretty straight-forward if it is only for the purpose of speeding up file transfers.
Select the directory from the drop down menu in the top-left corner and just drag and drop. When a prompt window comes up, just choose OK and the transfer will proceed.
This fix will most likely be included in Service Pack 1. No word yet as to when the pack will be released.

me, and beyond compassionate when I’m all in a emotional tizzy. I so love you and thank you for your friendship. Back to the story of the day: Today work was nuts; for you folks thinking about going to Microsoft Vista, all I can say is read thisarticleFIRST. Users complaining on slow downloads seem to be common with Vista. Which is why my copy is just siting here unused. Sorted that out over the two hours it took to build and test a Vista box. I formated it over with Linux just as soon as it was

That fix does not work for most people.

For those of you using the Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC, and if your are having massive internet download slowdown and file transfer slowdown in Windows VISTA, your problems are over: One needs to update the driver. Basically very simple, it just took me two days to figure it out and find the right driver. All the blogs and websites talk about disabling this, and tweeking that. I tried all that crap and it didn’t work. No one suggested to install the following driver at least that I could find and if the folks who are trying to solve this problem are like me, I know, I know you want to throw your computer out the window, and you are sitting there saying, Why Why Why didn’t I wait to do this upgrade. Just Google —> “WinVista_6104_NIC_8139-20070620.zip” and you will find it.
Install the new driver and just like magic your internet speeds and file transfer speeds should once again be smokin, of course your milage will vary dependent on the speed of your ISP and network. Whew!

Hi
I have had MS XP on my old laptop and hardly have any problem of down loading. Now I have MS Window Vista and down load speed is very poor especially worse when broad band problems add on to it.
Please advice me on this problems as it is stopping me to earn my living

i need help!! have a brand new gateway fx series desktop core2quad 2.66ghz 6gb ddr2 ram with vista(64bit) sp1 and ie 7, download speed tops out at 764bits per sec yes bits not kbits, also have a 9 year old dell laptop running xp pro sp3 downloads at 500+kbits (lightning faster than vista)
any idea why vista downloads so slow?
