This list of free essential programs will make the life of any developer or power user much easier.

  • 7-Zip handles practically any zip version you could imagine. It will decompress tar, gz, rar, zip, bz2, rpm, arj, cab, cpio, 001, and deb files. It also allows for plugins to add further file type support.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit PDF Reader are essentials due to the ubiquitous nature of PDF documents. Foxit is lighter, much faster, and a smaller install. It’s preferable on a system with limited resources, like a laptop. Adobe’s tools can be resource hounds.
  • AntiVIR Personal Edition is completely free, lightweight, and effective. No antivirus is impervious to bad (user) behavior. However, this tool allows you to add an element of protection while not requiring you to open up Active X controls or slow your PC down with a bunch of bloatware.
  • Audiograbber, because we all listen to mp3s and it makes it very easy to rip them from your CDs.

Installing And Running Adobe Reader for vista

When you want to put a document online, or distribute it via e-mail, and you need it to look exactly the way it looks on paper, then PDF is the way to go — and the standard application used to view PDF files is, of course, Adobe Reader.

Unfortunately, according to Adobe, Vista doesn’t support older versions of Reader, and the current version, 8 (released in November, 2006), will be updated for Vista sometime “in the first half” of 2007. So what’s the story in the meantime?

If you need more evidence of the Web shaking up the packaged business, talk to Bruce Chizen. The CEO of Adobe Systems oversees a company that successfully harnessed the power of an earlier technology wave–personal computers–for tasks like digital publishing and photography.

Now Adobe is looking to add Web-delivered services to its product line, says Chizen.
