REGARDLESS OF WHAT Bill Gates might have claimed in interviews, a lot of the goodies in Vista have – I’ll be diplomatic – drawn inspiration from rival products, primarily Apple’s Mac OS X. The trouble is that Microsoft has prioritised the wrong bits, taken the wrong inspiration.
And the sad irony is that if it had made different choices, we’d have got a simpler, faster, safer Vista a lot sooner. So what sources and where has MS got its ideas from? Many people leave their PCs on all of the time. That often means dozens of open windows, and information that hasn’t been saved as recently as possible. There’s nothing worse than going back to your PC and seeing a message that says “Windows recently downloaded and installed an important security update to help protect your computer. This update required an automatic restart.” Or, while you are working, you may grow tired of the nagging little pop-up window with a countdown that tries to reboot your computer in 15 seconds. Well, it’s finally here and the official launch of the UK edition of Windows Vista yesterday in London proved to be a somewhat surreal event, peppered with appearances by Bill Gates and a turn from the band The Feeling (for no good reason that I could see…). Anyway, it was held at the British Library and Vista’s many and various features were ably demonstrated. I won’t bore you with the details of the new operating system, regular visitors will already have a pretty good idea of what it is all about and the media is bound to be stuffed with Vista stories, but one part of the launch that may not get the coverage it deserves was the simultaneous launch of Turning The Pages 2.0.
