If you didn’t already know it you should be aware that the password protection on your PC is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. There are things you can do to make it harder for anyone to get at your files, and we’ll come to that in a moment but first, at one time or another many of us forget our logon password. Faced with an inaccessible PC, some users resort to drastic action, like re-installing Windows.

There’s really no need, blanking the password using a special type of Linux boot disc is fairly straightforward. Cracking a password takes a little longer but again it’s easy enough if you know what to do, and one way is to use another Linux live CD boot utility called Ophcrack. Download the .iso file and use a utility like Imgburn to create a CD. Just boot the PC from the CD and watch it hack away at your password. Most times it only take a few seconds to crack a 4 – 6 character password otherwise it might take a few minutes but if you thought your PC was protected, think again, it’s scary stuff. More »

Any Mac owner should know what to do if his/her computer refuses to turn on. Whenever you face such a situation you don’t have to give up and take your Mac to the nearest Apple Store immediately because there a number of steps that you can take to prevent yourself being embarassed.

Although some tend to let others solve their problems, there are other Mac users that want to know how to take care of their computer on their own. If you are such a person you should read the Apple support article describing this problem or read this so you will know the exact things you have to check for when your Mac refuses to start up.

Check the power cable

First of all, you have to make sure that you Mac is connected to a working power outlet. You may want to plug any other electric device in the outlet to give it a try. Microsoft is helping Windows 7 customers deal with poor startup performance in the context in which they have at least one external SATA port that is not used.

The Redmond company has confirmed an issue related to the latest iteration of the Windows client, in which customers can experience sluggish boot times on computers that have an unused external SATA port.

And while the software giant is not offering affected users an update to resolve the issue, it is providing them with a hotfix which can be downloaded from Microsoft Support.

“You experience a long startup time on a Windows 7-based computer that has an unused external SATA port,” reads Microsoft’s description of the problem.

For those not familiar with SATA, the acronym stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, and is essentially a consumer mass storage interconnect designed for the ATA command protocol. More »

Windows start up sound is some thing which you may not want to hear every time, specially when you are booting your computer in room and it may disturb others, or in some cases there are people who are annoyed by the sound everytime windows boots up.

For all those who would like to remove the start up sound and make windows silent

1. Once windows is started, press Window Key+R or locate Start Menu >> Run and type mmsys.cpl and press Enter key or clock ok button.

2. This will open windows sound dialogue window, click Sound tab then locate the checkbox which says Play Windows start up sound at the bottom of the dialogue window and uncheck the checkbox as shown in the image below. More »
