The Update feature notifies you of the latest updates and bug fixes for the XP directly from the Web site. To the Update, you click the Start menu, point at the All Programs button, and then click Update in the Programs menu.

Automatically Update Your Software With Update Checker

About 10 years ago CNET used to provide a great service that would tell you when updated versions of the programs running on your PC were available.
