Okay, so Apple PCs are still a lot safer than Windows PCs, but the next time an Apple owner smugly reminds you of the fact, just ask him or her whether they’ve installed the security update issued in April 19th. This fixes no less than 25 security flaws in OS X and it includes three patches for ‘Zero Day’ bugs, and vulnerabilities that would allow hackers to gain access to data. So far this year Apple has issued at least one security update each month and whilst the level of threat and number of attacks are nowhere near the level PC owners have to put up with, it does appear that Apple owners may no longer be as safe as they once used to be. Windows Vista more than doubled its market share in March from the prior month, while the share of computers running Mac OS X fell for the first time in nine months, according to statistics released today by market research firm Net Applications.
By the end of March, Vista was used by 2.04% of computers connected to the Internet, according to the Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based company. That’s up from 0.93% of PCs in February.
Now ranked the fifth-most popular operating system by Net Applications, Vista jumped ahead of Windows 98, which had a 1.36% share. Vista still trailed its seven-year-old ancestor, Windows 2000, which had 4.71% share in March. Read More»

Microsoft has started private testing of the next version of Office for the Macintosh, which is due out in the second half of the year. Office 2008 for Mac, as the product is known, helps bring the desktop suite back into compatibility with two key technologies.
First, the product is the first version of Office that runs natively on both Intel- and Power PC-based Macs. The new software also adds support for the XML file formats that Microsoft added to the Windows version of Office–Office 2007, which hit store shelves in January. Read More»

Apple updated its Boot Camp software, which enables Intel-based Macs to reboot into a Windows operating system partition, to support Vista, Microsoft’s latest version of Windows. To use the new Boot Camp, Mac owners will have to buy “a bona fide full version of Microsoft Windows: XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate,” Apple said.

Jason Here’s a handy tool for more advanced PC users, faced with a troublesome PC that just won’t boot. It’s called Super Grub, and if you’ve had any dealings with Linux you may recognize the name as that of a popular bootloader (GRUB stands for Grand Unified Bootloader). In case you are wondering a bootloader is a program that configures a PC prior to loading an operating system whether it be Linux or Windows (in Windows booting is controlled by a file called the Master Boot Record or MBR). Super Grub can fix booting problems with both OS’s, and is a dab hand at sorting out MBR problems. All you have to do is download the files and use them to create a bootable floppy (or CD or USB drive). It’s not the sort of thing you’ll need to use very often, hopefully not at all, but you’ll be glad you downloaded come the day your PC stubbornly refuses to boot!

If you try to run an old DOS game on Vista, you’ll probably get an error “This system does not support fullscreen mode.” Fortunately, this isn’t a dead end. Download a copy of DOSBox, the greatest MS-DOS emulator for any platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and more), and try running your game under DOSBox. Not only will you get support for old-school graphics like CGA and EGA, you can even run it in a window!
