Microsoft recently threw a splashy party for the release of Windows Vista inside of Second Life, the much talked about virtual world online, but users running Vista may have had trouble connecting to the service. Linden labs is currently working on an important upgrade to the Second Life viewer, something that needs to be done before they can attempt a fix for users who are having trouble.
A spokesman for Linden Lab said the fixes will likely be ready in a couple of weeks.
In a test of Second Life-Vista compatibility on a Dell XPS m1210, the operating system didn’t work properly with the virtual world because of an unsupported graphics driver. Read More»

Many people online are wondering if Microsoft will be releasing a TweakUI for Windows Vista or not. While we cant answer that particular question, we can help get TweakUI running on Windows Vista - and suggest a decent, Vista-specific alternative along the way.
TweakUI is a popular system configuration utility made by Microsoft since late Windows 95, and it provides quick and easy access to configure certain features in Windows without resorting to reshacking, registry editing, or other more dangerous tactics. Its not the most brilliant piece of code ever created, but its a nifty tool to have. You can download it at these links for Windows XP/2k3 x64 and x86. Read More»

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced it was about to release an update to its Windows Genuine Notifications software. I just checked Windows Update on a machine running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and found this waiting for me:

Last summer’s WGA release was a horror show; will this sequel be kinder? Read More»

MICROSOFT HAS BEEN QUAKING in its big, furry, Volish boots over virtualisation, if this betanews.com article is to be believed. Supposedly, after some virtualisation doo-dads were toyed with to stick an active rootkit to a beta Vista kernal, Microsoft got so worried that it contemplated giving Vista virtualisation the boot.
As you may well be aware, virtualisation functions were left out of the Vista home editions. Betanews decided to chase up the Vole on this, and extracted the following from a Volish spinster: “Virtualization is a fairly new technology, and one that we think is not yet mature enough from a security perspective for broad consumer adoption.” Read More»

Even if you turn on show hidden files in Windows Explorer some files will remain hidden. These files are super hidden. Set the registry value below to 1.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
“SuperHidden” = 1
You will need to reboot after changing this setting for it to work.

Installing Quicken on Vista can be quite frustrating for people. A client of mine installed the software and was unable to get Quicken to open up and could not uninstall it. The trick is that you need to run the install as Administrator or you will run into problems. First lets go through the steps to install Quicken:
1. Insert your Quicken install disc. Click Cancel when the installation prompt appears.
2. Go to Computer (click the Start button and go to Computer).
3. Right-click the Quicken CD and select Open.
4. Right-click install.exe.
5. Select Run as Administrator.
6. If the UAC prompt appears, click Allow. Read More»

I first heard about this Vista hack a few weeks ago but I decided to try it for myself before passing it on. It should be of interest to anyone thinking of buying a copy of Vista, and the good news is that you dont have to buy the full retail version. You can save yourself a few bob and Clean Install Vista using the cheaper Upgrade version. This was always possible with XP and previous versions of Windows and when asked you had to briefly load a legitimate Windows installation disc to verify that you were entitled to an upgrade but it was thought that Microsoft had omitted this facility in Vista. In fact they did, but the left a backdoor wide open, and this is how it works. For the full skinny visit the most excellent Windows Secrets website. Read More»
