You can turn the 32-bit SKUs of Windows Vista into the 64-bit editions of the operating system. But it will cost you… Vista is the first client platform that features both the x86 and x64 flavors simultaneously, on the market since the moment of launch. Although Microsoft delivers the operating system on a single DVD, the media only contains either all the 32-bit editions, or all the 64-bit SKUs, but not all of them.
In this context, jumping from the 32-bit version of the platform to the 64-bit one is not as streamlined a process as it might seem. Read More»

There is little doubt that 64-bit architectures are the future, as far as the parallel evolution of processors and operating systems goes. But when it comes down to Windows, the 32-bit version of the platform will survive not only with Windows Vista, but also with Windows 7. At this point in time, among the scarce details made available by Microsoft about the forthcoming iteration of Windows, to follow Vista, the only sure thing is that Windows 7 will come in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors.
According to estimates from the Redmond company, by mid 2008, the install base of the Windows operating system would surpass the 1 billion milestone worldwide. But the vast majority of those Windows copies will still be 32-bit, largely just Windows XP and Windows Vista. Read More»

There are many programs available for extracting the product key from a Windows XP or Vista installation. The only problem is that they generally require the computer to be functional to run. These programs are useless if the operating system is corrupt and the computer will not boot into Windows. Fortunately, there are other options. This article explains how you can retrieve the product key with just the ntuser.dat file from the machine. You can also download a stand-alone version of my decrypter tool.
While this may not sound very useful to the average user, if you work with computers on a daily basis you have most likely ran into this problem: You have to perform a fresh installation of Windows on a computer with a corrupt operating system, and the product key has been lost. This method makes it easy to find. Read More»

There’s more to deploying the Windows operating system than what meets the eye. Sure enough, a single installation of Windows is bound to be an as streamlined as possible process, but in scenarios involving multiple copies of the platform, users will hit some speed bumps, no doubt about it. Microsoft has a few resources in place designed to tackle just such cases and, until now, they were all offered via the Windows Server System Reference Architecture. The next step on the evolution of the Windows Server System Reference Architecture is the Windows Deployment Services Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide. The Redmond company has just made available the Infrastructure Planning and Design as an open beta available for download thought Connect. (Download here) Read More»

Actually that’s a wee bit misleading but if you like the appearance of Vista, but don’t want to go to the fuss, bother and expense of installing the new operating system on your PC then have a look at BricoPack Vista Inspirat Ultimate 2. This collection of graphical tweaks makes your 32-bit Windows XP PC look like it is running Vista. It’s basically a set of themes, icons and sounds that closely mimic those in Vista and it includes some interesting extras, such as a Mac-like Docking bar . It definitely works best on faster PCs, 2GHz and above, slower machines might find it a bit hard going, it can have an impact on performance, and it only works on 32-bit versions of XP. Be sure to read the Installation advice, especially the bit about what to do if it doesn’t work and you need to uninstall it.

To fix this problem, you should first try uninstalling any hardware devices that you are no longer using. If that does not solve the problem, you will have to reinstall Windows.
The system hive has exceeded its maximum size and new devices cannot work until the size is reduced. The system hive is a permanent part of the registry associated with a set of files that contains information related to the configuration of the computer on which the operating system is installed. Configured items include applications, user preferences, devices, and so on. The problem might be specific devices that are no longer attached to the computer but are still listed in the system hive. The counterfeited software has always represented a problem for both software companies and consumers and the phenomenon is getting stronger nowadays. It appears that pirated technologies are available even in retail stores, which makes the fight against such software almost impossible. According to PC World, there were cases when users bought Windows, but when trying to install it, the Windows Genuine Advantage technology warned them that the operating system was not genuine. And this happened when Amanda Barr, from Midland, Ontario, bought the software from a local retail store.
“They (the computer store) told me I hadn’t installed the program properly and I had to take it out and do it again. The store manager even threatened me and became abusive,” she said, according to the same source mentioned above. Read More»

What is probably the most common question I get regarding application compatibility? Can you just give me a list of all of the applications that work on Windows Vista?
Sounds easy, huh? Well, it’s not quite that easy.
First of all, there is the obvious problem of claiming that any software works at all. If anybody can come up with a full proof way of proving that any piece of software at all is bug-free, then that person is going to be very rich indeed. Even if we fully test software as we would use it, that doesn’t mean we use it how you would use it. If I use some CAD software to design houses again and again and it works flawlessly under a huge amount of testing, what happens if the bugs exist when you use it to design something very small (like a screw) or something with a lot more vertices, such as a piston engine? We just don’t know. Read More»
