If you have an upgrade DVD and want to do a fresh installation you can, you’ll just need to take a few extra steps to get the job done…
Start by booting the computer using the Vista upgrade DVD. Select the ‘Install Now’ option, but don’t enter the Product Key (leave it blank) and deselect the option to automatically activate. Setup will ask you to confirm that you want to install without a product key entered; yes this is what you want to do. Now setup does not know what edition you are installing, so you’ll need to tell it– tell it the correct edition you have the upgrade (you will not be able to trick it, so choose the correct edition). Just in case the 64-bit editions of Windows Vista are not the thing for you, the free 120 days version of Windows XP Professional x64 is still available for download. This is nothing new, by all means. In fact the download went live all the way in 2005. These days the free trial version passed the two-year milestone since it was initially offered for download. And it’s still available for download. Users have two options, either order the trial CD online or download it.
Obviously, the first variant involves shipping and handling charges and only the second is actually free. Read More»

Sometimes the best solution for a complicated PC performance issue is to reinstall your operating system and other applications you run. Although a radical and time-consuming step, format and reinstall normally speeds up your PC and enhances your productivity at the long run.
The issue many people i know faced when reinstalling their PC, is to find their Microsoft software serial numbers. In most cases ,when acquiring a PC you also purchase your Operating system of choice (XP, Vista and others) and productivity suite (Office). The dealer installs the purchased software, but sometime fails to provide you with the serial numbers for the software you purchased. The thing is that you need those serial numbers if you want to reinstall your PC. Read More»

Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is one of the easiest, most effective and least expensive (it’s FREE) key finder programs available. I highly recommend it.
While other more complicated key finder programs are sometimes sold for upwards of $50USD, Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder does exactly what you need if you’re ready to reinstall a piece of software but you can’t find your product key. It’s small, simple and does one thing very well - exactly what you need during a lost product key crisis! Read More»

With the release of Windows Vista comes a surprising change to the way the upgrade version works.
Unlike previous version of Windows, you can no longer wipe out your existing Windows installation and install a fresh install of Vista with the upgrade DVD. Instead, your upgrade version on top of the previous version of Windows you have.
This change will help cut down on the number of people buying the wrong version of Windows Vista but creates a huge annoyance for any power user that wants to start fresh with a new Windows operating system. Read More»

With Windows XP, antipiracy measures were a bit of an afterthought. But with Windows Vista, Microsoft had pirates in its sights from the get-go. Even the unique Vista retail packaging–a plastic box with one round corner–was designed, in part, to thwart counterfeiters.
And the packaging is just the start; most of Microsoft’s antipiracy work is built-into the software itself, meaning that just copying the code and getting a product key isn’t enough. “It’s a different game for the counterfeiters,” Cori Hartje, director of Microsoft’s Genuine Software Initiative, said in an interview. “They’re having to resort to this full attack on the product.” Read More»

I first heard about this Vista hack a few weeks ago but I decided to try it for myself before passing it on. It should be of interest to anyone thinking of buying a copy of Vista, and the good news is that you dont have to buy the full retail version. You can save yourself a few bob and Clean Install Vista using the cheaper Upgrade version. This was always possible with XP and previous versions of Windows and when asked you had to briefly load a legitimate Windows installation disc to verify that you were entitled to an upgrade but it was thought that Microsoft had omitted this facility in Vista. In fact they did, but the left a backdoor wide open, and this is how it works. For the full skinny visit the most excellent Windows Secrets website. Read More»

Traditionally, you are required to have a previous installation of Windows before you can upgrade, e.g. have Windows XP on your system before using Windows Vista Upgrade DVDs.
What if you have ALREADY upgraded to Windows Vista but are having system issues that require formating and re-installing Windows? Paul Thurrot proposed this hack that lets you install a Windows Vista Upgrade, without needing to re-install Windows XP first:
