Internet Explorer 8 is not the fastest browser in the universe. This, according to IE Program Manager, Christian Stockwell, working on the performance of the browser. However, this is not to say that the Redmond company has not poured a consistent amount of efforts into boosting the performance of IE7’s successor. In fact, Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, planned for release by the end of this month, will offer palpable proof of the new horsepower under the browser’s hood.
“When we took a hard look at our goals and considered what we could do to build the best browser, we were presented with a quandary. On the one hand, we could focus very narrowly on scripting performance, trusting that our investment would noticeably improve our users’ browsing experience. Alternatively, we could invest more broadly in realistic scenarios, measuring heavily-used subsystems and investing our optimization effort accordingly. We opted for the latter approach,” Stockwell noted.
Even as early as March 2008, IE GM Dean Hachamovitch indicated that JavaScript performance was up 2.5 times, the Gmail inbox was loading 34% faster, the task of opening a new conversation took 45% less time, while that of opening a thread 25% less. With IE8 Beta 2, Microsoft has tweaked the execution time for the browser, but it has also managed to speed up navigation and user interaction. Read More»

If you are running a Windows operating system, regular updates need to be installed. Although it is unfortunate that the operating system needs patches, it is good that this happens on a regular basis. By default Windows will be configured to automatically download and install updates.
But even the update process can have errors, in which case the whole computer update will fail. This potentially means security wholes are not patched, so nobody wants this to last too long. In many cases the solution is to turn off the automatic updates and manually update Windows. This means browsing to the Windows update website and scanning your computer for the necessary updates from there. If the manual update succeeeds, the automatic update function can be turned on again.
However, not all Windows update errors can be solved this way. Some are related to the svchost.exe process and others are related to the Windows installer, msiexec. In the case of Windows installer problems, it can help to re-register the installer program, msiexec. Read More»

Although Apple is yet to acknowledge 3G connectivity issues surrounding its newly-released iPhone, reports are hitting from everywhere with claims of both hardware and software glitches to be the cause of weak signals. Additionally, Apple is said to be prepping a software fix to deal with the problems users are experiencing.
A BusinessWeek piece, for instance, reveals that the Infineon chipset used to provide 3G connectivity in the iPhone is likely the cause of the said issues. Forced to keep up with the immense data consumption of the device, the connectivity is poor or lost in some cases. Other sources cited in the report say that Apple has been so conservative with the software settings that the device cannot accurately determine whether the 3G signal and bandwidth are sufficient to support the features using it.
“Two sources say Apple will likely issue a software update by the end of September - if not by the end of this month - to resolve the issues,” reads the report. “Apple and Infineon are currently testing the fix, which will be included in a broader update of the iPhone’s software [...]. Part of the role of the Infineon chip is to check whether there’s enough 3G bandwidth available in a given area. If 3G isn’t available or there isn’t enough bandwidth, the iPhone will be shifted to a slower network.” Read More»

Deleting information from your computer is easy if you don’t mind deleting everything. This is not optional unless you are actually preparation on reinstalling windows and starting from scratch!
1. Download a program called Secure Erase from the internet and save it to a floppy disk or CD-R. You may need to unzip the file first.
2. Access BIOS during the boot stage before the computer gets to the OS screen. This can be accomplished by pressing whatever key the computer tells you to when it says “”Press F2 to enter start-up”, for example.
3. Change the boot order so that the computer boots from either the CD drive or floppy drive, depending on which drive you used for your Secure Erase program.
4. Exit BIOS. The DOS prompt should appear once the computer has started up. Read More»

What I really want to do is add a link to Google Docs on the right-click (context) menu in Windows Explorer. That way, I could open a file in Google Docs by right-clicking it in Explorer and choosing Send To > Google Docs.
Well, I wasn’t able to figure out how to do this. So instead, I created a shortcut to open Google Docs, and then I browsed to the file and opened it the old-fashioned way.
This won’t save you a lot of time, but at least Google Docs makes it easy for you to transmit the file to the service as an e-mail attachment. And, of course, you can send the file to other e-mail recipients at the same time.
To create the shortcut to Google Docs, log in to the service, copy the URL in the address bar, right-click the desktop or any folder window, choose New > Shortcut, paste the URL in the Location field, click Next, type Google Docs (or the name of your choice), and press Enter (or click Finish).
Now navigate to the shortcut you just created, right-click it, and choose Properties. Click in the “Shortcut key” box, and type your preferred keyboard shortcut (I chose Ctrl-Alt-G). Read More»

A couple of days ago, I met an old friend of mine who just got his hands on a brand new Mac and, after about half an hour of showing the ins and outs of the machine, he asked me why the Mac community has so few free applications. If he had known that I would start writing down every piece of free and/or open source software capable of running on a Mac and keep talking about them for a whole hour, I think he wouldn’t have asked me that question in a million years.
To be fair, I kind of slowed down about 30 minutes after I started writing the list but still got pretty far to cover two pages. Those were the apps that I could remember at the moment, while still trying to write down other apps in no particular order.
The exact same question seems to haunt a lot of Mac switchers out there and thus, I decided to put up a list of the most important free applications I would install on my own Mac after performing a clean install.
Because I do want to give the list some type of order, I have put the apps in six categories, again, in no particular order: Internet, network, audio/video, graphics, games, editors and miscellaneous. The content in the first five categories is pretty obvious. In the sixth, I have included the programs that wouldn’t fit in any of the first categories. Read More»

Speed Launch is an application designed to deliver a breath of fresh air to the process of launching mundane and repetitive tasks in Windows, offering a high level of flexibility in comparison to what is available by default with the operating system. The product of a collaboration between Matt Dyor, a patent attorney working with Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business, and David Craig, a support escalation engineer with Microsoft Office Delta Force team, Speed Launch will centralize all the shortcuts thrown at it (actually dragged and dropped), and will classify and then launch them in accordance with keywords that the end users will set up.
“Speed Launch lets you open anything you use frequently in seconds. Just take the “thing” (document, program, or website), drop it on the bull’s eye, and then give it a name that appeals to you. To open it any time later hit “Windows Key + C” and the launch window will open. You just type the name and hit enter. It’s that simple,” Dyor stated. Read More»
