Restoring Confidence

January 24, 2008 by Jason

If the number of emails and letters I receive on accidental deletion of files is anything to go by we’re in suffering an epidemic of ‘butter fingers’… Picture files on memory cards are by far the most popular files to get zapped by mistake but it affects everything, from Word documents to album tracks, and I can’t deny that I haven’t done it myself, but when it happens the worst thing you can do is panic. If you do the chances are you make the situation even worse, so when you’ve erased a file, and you want it back the first thing to do is check the Recycle Bin. If it’s not there then there is still a very good chance all or part of it is still on the drive, and this little freeware program, called Restoration could get it back for you. The program is small and runs from any file location, even a memory card, so it doesn’t mess around with Windows. Read More»

Lock Out The Keyloggers

January 20, 2008 by Jason

A keylogger, as you probably know, is a type of spyware program that infects your PC and sits quietly in the background, recording every keystroke you make. The idea is sooner or later you’ll type in login and passwords, and these will be sent back, via your Internet connection, to fraudsters, who will use the information to raid your bank account.

Before you get too worried, provided your PC’s security is kept up to date, you use decent AV and firewall programs, and avoid dodgy porn and file sharing websites, the chances of getting caught are quite small, but it doesn’t hurt to take extra precautions. A freeware program called Keyscrambler should make it Read More»

Start Me Up … Faster

December 22, 2007 by Jason

I recently noted that Vista has some interesting new behaviors regarding applications that are launched from the Startup folder. By default, their I/O priorities are throttled back for a total of one minute from launch. This is a good idea to keep lots of smaller or background-use applications from all starting up at once, but it doesn’t seem to be such a good idea if you try to boot an application like Outlook, which is by nature I/O intensive, by putting it in the Startup folder.

To that end, I tried a few experiments. I wrote a batch file to start up several major applications Outlook, Word, Windows Live Writer, AIM and at least one or two other things and put it into the Startup group. Between each program launch, I instigated a forced seven-second delay by using the CHOICE command (a sneaky trick I picked up from somewhere). I wanted to see if this would cause any difference in the amount of utilization or responsiveness. Read More»

Windows Vista Tools : Sticky Notes

December 17, 2007 by Jason

Sticky notes is a small tool where you can take notes on a Tablet PC using a tablet pen. It is possible to take notes also using your mouse to draw your notes on the note pane of the Sticky Notes application.

But the most interesting and useful point for using the Stiky Notes is you can also record your vocal notes. I found it practical to take voice notes by using the Sticky Notes.

When you open the Sticky Notes application, a blank note is presented. You can draw your notes or start recording your voice by clicking on the Record button. You can view previous or next notes by navigating back and forth using the navigation arrows. Read More»

Simple Zip Code Geocoding

February 06, 2007 by Jason

The ability to geocode, or translate into latitude and longitude, postal codes is a fairly useful hack to have in your programming toolbox. Quick and dirty zip geocoding allows you to do some neat things fairly efficiently and with a minimal amount of code. Though it’s U.S. centric, it allows you to add location-based functionality to your apps without requiring any real personal information to be transfered or stored.

If your application only needs to convert a zip code (or any address) into a lat/lon coordinate, say for simple mapping purposes, the easiest solution is to use the Google Maps Geocoding API. In addition to the client-side javascript functionality, you can directly query the geocoding system from php using an http request like this: Read More»

Different types of Spyware

ParasiteWare
ParasiteWare is the term for any Adware that by default overwrites certain affiliate tracking links. These tracking links are used by webmasters to sell products and to help fund websites. The controversy is centered on companies like WhenU, eBates, and Top Moxie, a popular maker of Adware applications. These companies have release their software to assist users in getting credit for rebates, cash back shopping, or contributions to funds. To the end user ParasiteWare represents little in the way of a security threat.

Adware
Adware, also known as an Adbot, can do a number of things from profile your online surfing and spending habits to popping up annoying ad windows as you surf. In some cases Adware has been bundled (i.e. peer-to-peer file swapping products) with other software without the user’s knowledge or slipped in the fine print of a EULA (End User License Agreement). Not all Adware is bad, but often users are annoyed by adware’s intrusive behavior. Keep in mind that by removing Adware sometimes the program it came bundled with for free may stop functioning. Some Adware, dubbed a “BackDoor Santa” may not perform any activity other then profile a user’s surfing activity for study.
