I am naturally wary of any program that claims to be able to speed up Windows and solve performance problems. They rarely do any good and in some cases can make things even worse. I’m not about to change my mind since no single program can hope to cover the near infinite range of problems on a well-used PC and until now I have used a variety of tools and utilities to address specific issues, but now many of them – plus some new ones – have been gathered together in one place, in an excellent free application called Glary Utilities.

Windows Vista has a feature called System Restore that automatically backs up registry and system files whenever you install new software or drivers.
This feature is useful when you install evil software that makes your computer run really slow. But don’t worry, System Restore won’t remove Windows Vista.

In Vista, SystemRestore is set to delete restore points after roughly 136 years … yeah, let that sink…
Normally Windows uses up to 15 percent of a drive’s available space to save restore points. In XP, the option to change this figure was configurable from the System Restore tab of the System Properties dialog box. But sadly this option is no longer offered in Vista. But u can do so as follows : Open regedit and go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ SystemRestore\Cfg Double-click the DiskPercent. The default is f (in hexadecimal) which is 15 in decimal. Read More»

USB pen drives have become a source of some concern for a lot of system administrators. There’s almost nothing to stop someone with one of these devices from using it to copy or steal data from PCs in offices, commercial premises, schools and colleges. In fact the problem was addressed in Windows XP Service Pack 2, which includes a new Registry key that stops data being copied to USB memory devices by classifying them as Read-Only media; this tip shows you how to use it.

When large businesses buy new PCs, they often wipe the hard drives clean and install a fresh copy of Windows, along with the other software they want workers to have. Some consumers, frustrated with all of the trial software, desktop icons and other stuff that comes loaded on their machines, are doing the same thing.
However, what works for businesses isn’t always so easy for individuals. Many computers don’t actually come with a clean copy of the operating system. Jason My daughter is using an old Laptop with a very small (by today’s standards) hard disk. She has filled it up with music to load onto her iPod, and it keeps complaining that it’s running out of space.
She has done Disk Cleanup -
Open My Computer
Right click on the C:/ drive
Left click Properties
Select the General tab
Left click Disk Cleanup
