The Guide for IT Pros for Microsoft Office Web Apps is now live on the Microsoft Download Center, and as the label implies, the guide is tailored to IT professionals.
Essentially, the resource is focused on one aspect of Office Web Apps, namely the on-premise deployment available to volume licensing customers for introduction on top of Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products in their organization.
The latest iteration of the guide is designed to allow IT pros to get familiarized with the final version of Office Web Apps.

According to Microsoft, a total of two computers are more than sufficient to qualify a customer for Volume Licensing, Software Assurance and the adjacent benefits. Eric Ligman, Global Partner Experience lead Microsoft Worldwide Partner Group, revealed that, despite the common belief for some that a minimum of five PCs was necessary for Volume Licensing, the fact of the matter was that two machines were more than enough.
The misconception comes from the fact that Microsoft sets a minimum number of five licenses that need to be purchased by business customers as a part of their Volume Licensing agreement. However, the Redmond company doesn’t specify in what manner users will deploy the software they licensed.
“Both the Open License and Open Value licensing programs require a minimum order of five (5); however, it is not 5 computers, it is 5 Licenses (for Open License) or 5 Licenses+Software Assurance or Software Assurance alone (for Open Value),” Ligman stated, offering “an example of how a two computer company could easily qualify for Open License.” According to Ligman, a customer could install Windows and Office on a PC and Windows and Office plus Streets and Trips on a second machine in order to qualify for a Volume License agreement. With its latest version of Windows, Microsoft supports multiple activation scenarios, each tailored to a specific Windows 7 license. In this regard, volume customers of Windows 7 have the option to perform volume activation for the operating system. Companies with a large number of clients can centralize the management tasks associated with the process of activating multiple Windows seats. Windows 7 volume activation works either via KMS (Key Management Service) or MAK (Multiple Activation Key). Technical decision makers can now access a document from Microsoft detailing the “Top 7 Things You Need to Know about Activation TDM.”
The resource is offered for free through the Microsoft Download Center, and it is essentially a PowerPoint document. As the official title implies, the software giant outlines no less than seven things that IT decision makers need to be aware of when it comes down to Windows 7 volume activation.
The company is even enumerating the Volume Activation Enhancements for Windows 7, including “Refined end-user experience: clear & simplified user interface; updated notification dialog; customizable user experience for the enterprise; and performance improvements to the core service. More »
Not all Microsoft customers are equal and not all treated in such a manner either. The difference lies in the license that accompanies software from the Redmond company. While end users have to deal with retail software or OEM images, corporate customers access Microsoft software through volume licenses. And there’s absolutely nothing stopping the software giant from threatening its volume customers as first class citizens.
