14 Things that Microsoft Needs to Do with Windows 7

Posted by Jason in Computer on June 14th, 2008

made no secret out of having, for some time now, been cooking the next iteration of , a translucent development process with very little transparent areas including details such as multi-touch, support for 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, and the evolution of the Vista kernel, graphics and audio subsystems. Pieces of the 7 puzzle are indeed starting to come together, and a more consistent perspective will be delivered at the company’s 2008 Professional Developers Conference, that will take place between October 27 and 30 in Los Angeles.

Chairman Bill Gates and with Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, and Live Engineering Group, have made it clear that 7 will be the evolution of Vista. With the current acting as the foundation for the next, there have already been mentions of Vista SP2 or even Vista R2, but since actual details are gagged, all speculations about 7 are fair game. In this context, Gates has also mentioned that 7 will be a product of ’s philosophy that states “do things better.” The Redmond company’s Co-Founder indicated that Vista has given ample opportunity for improvements with 7.

The intimate connection between 7 and Vista manages to raise questions as to just how much of the current client is going to survive into the next version, and just what sins it will pass along. Hopefully, has learned relevant lessons from Vista, and will not repeat the Wow mistakes. There are of course a few things that the Redmond company can do to ensure this. (more…)

While continuously claiming that its latest client is not a failure, and pointing to the 140 million licenses sold as of March 2008, the Redmond company seems keen on demonstrating that it can pull the out of the sinking sands of public opinion. In this regard, 1 is indeed used as a floating device, but a tad of marketing on the side can’t possibly hurt, can it? The focus for the time being, as far as is concerned, is business users. Windows Vista and Malware Immunity

Posted by Jason in Software, Windows Vista, Windows XP on May 21st, 2008

At the beginning of May, company PC Tools revealed that Vista “is not so immune.” And in this attempt to wrap the obvious together with statistics from a limited pool of users and serve the result as a revelation, the outfit went on to claim that “ Vista is more susceptible to than the eight year old 2000 , and only 37% more secure than XP”. Apparently, PC Tolls had detected 639 unique per 1,000 Vista machines, in comparison to just 586 for 2000, 478 for Server 2003, and 1,021 for XP. The conclusion is, of course, nothing short of obvious and was stated as clear as possible, with a challenge to Vista’s immunity.

Now, the fact is that citing data from over 450 million computers, in respect to PC Tools’ just 1.4 million machines, disputed the findings, and continued to claim that Vista is the safest on the market. has repeated this refrain since Vista was launched, and provided ample proof, from the data collected through the Tool to vulnerability counting games involving the main platforms. Even though with the advent of Vista the open source saw the ripe moment for to strengthen its grip over consumer PCs, the fact of the matter is that still holds a firm grip over the vast majority of desktops worldwide. And there is no change visible on the horizon, especially as the two largest vendors of operating systems have no plans to go against . 7, the successor of Vista, is set to bring to the table an overhauled graphical user interface. As far as 7 1 (M1) Edition Build 6.1.6519.1 is concerned, has survived without any major redesign, for the time being. There is, however, a certain amount of specific nip and tuck touch-ups across the in 7, for build 6.1.6519.1, but nothing definitive, and certainly nothing that provides a clue as to the final visual style of the next iterations. Windows XP Service Pack 3 - FAQ

Posted by Jason in Windows XP on January 19th, 2008

resources focused almost exclusively on wrapping up the Vista client, and then delayed yet again into 2008, with the deadline set by the summer of this year, XP 3 is long overdue, and at the same time in its final stages of development. At the end of December 2007, the Redmond company opened up the testing process of and made available for a public Release Candidate. The Standalone Update Package for XP 3 Release Candidate weighs in at just 336.1 MB and was dropped via the Center.

Not surprisingly, although it was mute for the most part of 2007 on both Vista SP1 and , the Redmond company is favoring, in terms of information disclosure, its latest client. Starting at the end of 2007, managed to become extremely chatty about Vista SP1. Not so much about . The reason is of course understandable. Vista, made available but a year ago, is pushed to the foreground, with XP left to eXPire in the background. (more…)
