Microsoft Leaked Windows Vista SP1 RTM

February 25, 2008 by Jason

Microsoft officially confirmed the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 downloads at the end of the past week. On February 21, 2008, the gold bits of Windows Vista SP1 were offered for download via Windows Update. The move was a derail from the timetable set for the delivery of the RTM Build of Vista SP1, initially planned for general availability starting with mid-March 2008, according to Mike Nash, Microsoft Corporate Vice President, Windows Product Management. Nash announced on February 4 that the final bits of Vista SP1 would find their way to end users through Microsoft Update, Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center in mid-March, and then through Automatic Updates beginning with mid-April.

But the fact that the end users of Vista got the short straw without even participating in the draw does not mean that the Redmond company did not release Vista SP1 RTM. Read More»

Configurating updates: stage 3 of 3 stuck in endless reboot loop

February 19, 2008 by Jason

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 might very well deliver users from the Reduced Functionality Mode black screen of death kill switch, but the prerequisite updates for the service pack are doing a wonderful job at cutting access to the operating system. Following Microsoft’s monthly patch cycle non-security updates released on February 12, 2007, containing two of the remaining prerequisite updates for Vista SP1, Vista users began complaining about installation failures. Some Vista machines, after the implementation of updates via Automatic Updates are thrown in an infinite reboot loop, while stuck on displaying the following message: “Configuring Updates Stage 3 of 3 0% complete. Do not turn off Computer.” Read More»

February 08, 2008 by Jason

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 are not the only Microsoft products being released to manufacturing this week. Cecilia Cole, WSUS Program Manager, announced that WSUS 3.0 Service Pack 1 had also reached RTM, and was subsequently made available for download. But at the same time, the RTM stage of Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP1 following in the heels of Windows Server 2008 is not coincidental. WSUS 3.0 SP1 is in fact designed to provide support for the Redmond company’s latest server operating system. Read More»

February 05, 2008 by Jason

Microsoft has announced that Windows Vista SP1 has been released to manufacturing (RTM). This means that the code for SP1 has been finalized and they are now preparing to distribute the update.

Unlike traditional releases Microsoft is planning on shipping SP1 on all distribution channels at once. To ensure that customers that already have Windows Vista will have a “great experience” the Windows Update and standalone installation release will be delayed until OEM manufacturers and retail boxes of Windows Vista have been updated with SP1 code. Windows Vista SP1 Standalone Packages

January 31, 2008 by Jason

Having introduced the first pre-beta testing version of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 all the way back in mid-July 2007, Microsoft has come quite a long way since. The company went public with the testing process of Vista SP1 in December of the past year, making available for download the Release Candidate build of the service pack. January 2008 brought with it two Refreshes to Vista SP1 RC, the first of which was dropped to all Vista users, with Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2 limited to only 15,000 testers via Microsoft Connect. According to Microsoft, Vista SP1 brings to the table a wide range of improvements in terms of performance, stability, reliability, security, compatibility, etc. Read More»

Windows Vista Update Fiesta

January 24, 2008 by Jason

Although it is on the verge of releasing the first service pack for Windows Vista, Microsoft has not stopped hammering away at the operating system via Windows Update. The Redmond company is currently in a transition process, subtle as it might be. A migration from a strategy focused on delivering major updates for its software products to one centered on an incremental evolution. Although the service pack strategy has become a tradition for Microsoft, the future points to a shift toward Windows Update.

Concomitantly with the advent of Windows Vista, the Redmond company started downplaying the relevance of service pack releases and pointing to Windows Update. Read More»

Will SP3 Save Windows XP?

January 16, 2008 by Jason

Will the third and final service pack for Windows XP manage to breath new life into the operating system? Will users and original equipment manufacturers be able to apply enough pressure on Microsoft to keep Windows XP alive? There is even an online petition available to save Windows XP. Anything but to move to Windows Vista. Yes, by all means. Save Windows XP. But from what? Is XP even in need of saving?

Last I checked, Windows XP still accounts for the lion’s share of the operating system market. All other platforms, including Windows Vista, don’t even manage to come close to it. And growing on the operating system market means actually eroding XP’s audience, because there is little elbow room with this ubiquitous platform having dug its roots in deep starting back in 2001. According to Net Applications, XP is credited with 76.91%, while after almost a year since it hit the shelves, Vista has only gone as high as 10.48%. By comparison Mac OS X has a share of 7.31% and all the Linux distributions just 0.63%. Read More»

On December 11th, 2007, Microsoft made available Security Bulletin MS07-069 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (942615). As it is a tradition with offering and implementing security updates into Internet Explorer, the company releases a complete set of patches for all the supported versions of the browser, every month.
