Vista SP1 RC Delivery via Windows Update Not as Smooth as You Might Think

December 19, 2007 by Jason

The delivery of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 via Windows Update is not as smooth as you might think. In fact, Microsoft is aware of erroneous installations for Vista SP1 RC, scenarios that subsequently involve failed deployments of the service pack. Through the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC Public Availability Program, Microsoft is allowing all Vista users to access the Release Candidate public build of Vista SP1 as a download from Windows Update, instead of the standalone installers also made available.

The program involves grabbing and executing a script designed to set a registry value that will permit the identification of Vista SP1 RC, on Windows Update. However, it is not uncommon for users to come across error 0×80092004, and having the Vista SP1 WU download stop. “This issue only affects customers who previously installed the RC Preview (Build 17042 / v658). It is caused by a component that did not completely uninstall when you uninstalled the RC Preview, especially if you tried to install the latest build over Windows Update right away”, Microsoft informed. Complete Overview of Windows XP Service Pack 3

December 07, 2007 by Jason

Microsoft is on the verge of making available the third and final service pack for Windows XP. Long overdue following numerous updates, Windows XP SP3 will hit by mid 2008. This much is certain, as the Redmond company has debuted the testing for the operating system’s service pack all the way back in July 2007. A near final Release Candidate build of XP SP3 is currently available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers with a public version looming on the horizon. In this context, Microsoft published an official overview of XP SP3.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released Windows XP updates, including security updates and hotfixes. It also includes select out-of-band releases, and a small number of new enhancements, which do not significantly change customers experience with the operating system. Read More»

Take Windows Vista Compatibility, Reliability and Stability

November 01, 2007 by Jason

Microsoft is offering Windows Vista users the means to take Windows Vista compatibility, reliability and stability up a notch ahead of the release of the first service pack for the operating system. In this context, the Redmond company has been hammering away at Vista, since the client hot the shelves in January 2007 with constant refreshes served through the Windows Update infrastructure. Although Windows Update is not yet a fully fledged substitute for the service pack release practice, Microsoft has hinted that small and incremental updates are the way of the future, in contrast to large and bloated refreshes.

Starting with its debut on the market, Vista has had quite a rough ride, experiencing a plethora of issues, mostly centered around software and hardware incompatibilities, as well as performance. Read More»

Vista SP1 Beta in September, Release in Q1 2008

August 29, 2007 by Jason

Now is the time and the time is now: let’s talk about Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Much has been made of what will or will not be included in SP1 and when it will be released (some accurate, some otherwise). I’m here to set the story straight: we’re in the process of developing and deploying a Beta version of SP1. This post will describe for you what to expect from that effort and how you can be involved in the process.

First, a note on service packs. As you are aware, service packs are part of our traditional software lifecycle; they’re something we do for most major products as a commitment to continuous improvement. But, the servicing situation has changed with the advent of Windows Vista, as we no longer rely solely on service packs as the main vehicle used to deploy system fixes and improvements. Read More»

Synchronized Reboot Smokes Skype

August 21, 2007 by Jason

Skype has finished its sleuthing and is ready to report on the conditions which led to the company discovering a flaw in its P2P networking code. The culprit? It turns out that Skype’s code wasn’t prepared for a massive restart of PCs caused by the standard Windows patching process.

“The disruption was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they rebooted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update,” Skype indicated on its blog. In other words, the conditions which led to the outage began with August’s very own Patch Tuesday. The name is given to the second Tuesday of the month, which Microsoft typically uses to push out patches via Windows Update. Read More»

Need Vista drivers?

July 20, 2007 by Jason

Ed Bott has recently put together a small, but growing list of links for some driver download pages for the Windows Vista Operating System. The list is far from complete, but it covers quite a few of the main ones.

Although Windows Update might solve most of your problems, by visiting the manufacturer’s website you can be assured that the version you’re getting is the most recent one. And with Windows Vista drivers, Read More»

10 reasons you should get Vista

July 10, 2007 by Jason

1. UI built for the era of video and digital photography
It’s not actually Microsoft’s key selling point, but the thing that everyone will probably find the most useful about Vista is that photos, videos and music are not treated the same as Word documents any more. When you open a folder of photos, they come up as they’d appear in Google Picasa or Apple iPhoto. There’s inbuilt basic photo editing. Music folders come up in columns of ID3 tags, a bit like iTunes. Finally, you don’t have to rely so much on third party apps to work with your files.

2. Image-based install
PC enthusiasts spend a lot of time installing and reinstalling Windows for their own and other people’s PCs. The Vista DVD is actually a pre-installed version of the OS in a compressed form, making it substantially quicker to install. It’s also much easier to customise for unprompted installation with the correct defaults, and you can even install your own software automatically at the time Vista is installed - like slipstreaming service packs but on steroids.
