Microsoft on Tuesday plans to push out a fix to repair problems caused by last week’s emergency cursor flaw patch. The fix will be delivered as a “high priority” update alongside Microsoft’s regular security updates, Christopher Budd, a Microsoft security staffer wrote on a corporate blog on Friday.
Microsoft has identified three additional applications that conflict with last week’s “critical” MS07-017 security update. Originally the company listed only the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel as software that would not function and cause error messages to appear. CD-Tag, ElsterFormular and TUGZip have been added to that list. “While the impact of these issues is clearly not widespread, it is affecting some of our customers,” Budd wrote. Read More»

You can add a lot of value to an old computer by installing and configuring software that its new owner could really use, and by resetting the operating system to as close to factory fresh as possible.
No one should be without at least a word processor (if not a whole office suite) and an antivirus program. If you’re removing such software for licensing reasons, at least install some free alternatives. OpenOffice ( www.openoffice.org ) is an excellent substitute for Microsoft Office (and Microsoft Word). Grisoft’s AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition ( http://free.grisoft.com ) is a fine alternative to any commercial antivirus product, and your beneficiary won’t have to pay for annual virus-definition subscriptions. If you expect Windows Vista’s service packs to be as substantial as XP’s were, then you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. Speaking to a group of financial analysts earlier this week, Michael Sievert, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Windows Marketing said that consumers should not expect service packs for the operating system to include several new features and updates. Why? Because Vista is “high quality right out of the gate,” he said.
That’s not to say service packs for the shiny new operating system won’t be released-they will-but they will not be nearly as sizable as previous ones such as Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2. Windows XP Service Pack 2, for instance, added features to the operating system such as Internet Explorer’s pop-up blocker, Bluetooth support, and the Windows Firewall. Sievert doesn’t expect Vista’s service packs to have those types of features mainly because most people should have already downloaded them through Windows Update. “They (service packs) have a different level of importance today as people get their updates in real-time using Windows Update,” said Sievert. Vista comes with a lot of different language packs available for download through the Windows Update. Unlike with XP, with Vista you can change languages as easily as logging off and logging back on, and each user of the computer can use his or her preferred language to interact with the PC. This is really great if you have a foreign exchange student at home, if you are learning a new language, or if you just simply want to have some fun! Read More»

Hacks at German wire Heise revealed that Microsoft’s updated Windows Genuine Advantage Notification phones home when the installation is aborted. The user is not notified of the communication, but Microsoft claims it is useful for it to know when an installation is cancelled.
Using network sniffer Wireshark the hacks say they also detected the software logging those not signing up to Windows update. It says data transmitted may contain enough information to identify individual computers. Microsoft told Heise it collected the data to improve the quality of the WGA for users. Read More»

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced it was about to release an update to its Windows Genuine Notifications software. I just checked Windows Update on a machine running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and found this waiting for me:

Last summer’s WGA release was a horror show; will this sequel be kinder? Read More»

To change the interval that Windows updates the time using the internet time servers via regedit, navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services \W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient
Select “SpecialPollInterval”
Change decimal value from 604800 to a different value in seconds. i.e.: 172800 (2 Days) or 86400 (1 Day) and so on.
We don’t recommend changing this unless you are on a broadband connection.

Many people leave their PCs on all of the time. That often means dozens of open windows, and information that hasn’t been saved as recently as possible. There’s nothing worse than going back to your PC and seeing a message that says “Windows recently downloaded and installed an important security update to help protect your computer. This update required an automatic restart.” Or, while you are working, you may grow tired of the nagging little pop-up window with a countdown that tries to reboot your computer in 15 seconds. A simple edit to the system Registry will end this annoyance and save you from losing potentially hours of work if a reboot occurs when you aren’t there to prevent it. Read More»

Many people are worried about upgrading to Windows Vista for the fact that on previous versions of windows there has been many bugs, so many people may wait a few months first but then others will just want to get it because its new.
Well to add to that fear:
If you choose to purchase an upgrade version of Windows Vista to upgrade Windows XP, you will no longer be able to use that version of Windows XP.
Not as a dual-boot option or on another system, because the key will be invalidated, preventing you from activating it.

Microsoft released its first batch of Windows Vista updates today along with two Ultimate Extras. In total, six updates to Vista were made available via Windows Update. They are as follows:
