UltraVNC PC-to-PC Remote Control
UltraVNC is one of many options for remotely controlling one computer from another across the Internet. Generically, VNC is a cross-platform protocol. For example, you could control a Windows box from Linux. UltraVNC is an implementation of VNC for the PC. The latest version, currently in beta, adds Vista support.
VNC unhelpfully stands for “Virtual Network Computing.” It is a protocol standard for handling remote control. It started life as a Bell Laboratories project, and has become the core of a whole family of open source and commercial products.
UltraVNC is specifically for the PC, but it will work to control any kind of computer, and vice versa. UltraVNC is optimized for when both ends of the remote control connection are PCs running UltraVNC. It’s just that certain features are not available if the other end of a connection is a VNC implementation but not specifically UltraVNC.
A particularly nice feature of UltraVNC is an add-on called SingleClick. With SingleClick, whoever is at the computer to be controlled can instantly make it a VNC server without having to have pre-installed the software. (It’s a mini version of the UltraVNC Server that can be customized and preconfigured for easy download by a Customer. In this scenario, the SingleClick server initiates the connection, thus allowing easy access through a customer’s firewall.)
Other add-ons include various options for dealing with situations where one, or both, ends of the connection are behind an NAT router.
