I stopped using Google products because of this google updater. I hate updaters running in the background. After all, none of google's applications are life critical, to check for regular updates every second.

I hate the multiple background services packaged along with ordinary applications.

I am now deleting all Google inserts in Regedit/Find. It was not in Control Panel. Stopping it in both Startup and Services in MSconfig did nothing!

What an invasion of privacy this is. It's so sneaky, as so many programs are.

What about the service. I did uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs and the service (and the scheduled task) was still there.

I did stop the service, delete all traces of Google Updater from hdd and registry. But the service still sits there on my "Services" page.

It doesn't run, but I don't want it there :(

How To Remove Background Process GoogleUpdate.exe From The System

Generally, a computer is never really quiet in the true sense of the word. There is always something going on. One of the events behind the scene is the detection of updates. Many applications tend to create their own background processes to detect updates to their program. These processes consume your computer resource and take up your CPU memory. Many users will just disable or remove these unnecessary and extra processes. If you are a Google applications user, don’t forget GoogleUpdate.exe will also be installed while you install Goolge applications such as Google Chrome, Google Lively, Google Earth, etc.

The GoogleUpdate is a silent background process which tries to access the internet without requesting permission from users and it doesn’t provide an automatic option for users to disable it. If you are thinking to remove or disable the GoogleUpdate.exe, you can probably try the following methods for Vista/XP.

1. The easiest way, of course, is you can try to use any permission-based firewall to block GoogleUpdate before considering to remove it completely.

2. Alternately, you can consider removing it permanently. However, bear in mind, by removing GoogleUpdate, it will prevent you from downloading the updates for the parent applications.

3. To remove GoogleUpdate, firstly go to Control Panel and then go to Scheduled Tasks. Remove Google Update (Task Scheduler Object) by selecting GoogleUpdateTaskUser icon and clicking on the delete link.

4. After removing Google Update Task Scheduler Object, the next thing to do is to delete GoogleUpdate.exe. Right click on the taskbar or press “Alt+Ctrl+Del” to run your Task Manager.

5. In the Task Manager, just select GoogleUpdate.exe and click the End Process button. After doing this, it should be possible to delete GoogleUpdate.exe. In other cases, GoogleUpdate may be installed as a service, in which case you will need to first stop the service before attempting to delete the file.

6. Next, open the Registry Editor (Click Start/Run and type Regedit, then back up the Registry before you make any modifications) and browse to the following subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\

7. In the right pane, locate the value named “Google Update”, right-click the name and select Delete. Click Yes to confirm the deletion. When finished, close the Registry Editor.

8. Last, reboot your system.

Googleupdater needs to figure out how to go through corporate proxy servers. They do not have an authentication method where some proxy servers like Bluecoat require Active Directory Authentication.

Google wake up an fix this issue if you want to live in corporate America!

Just go to the control panel and remove the program from there. If you aren't running it at start-up, there is no reason to have it at all.
