Work on Firefox 3 compatibility

Topics Firefox on December 14th, 2007

wants addon developers to start updating their themes and extensions for 3. Lack of addon is a frequent complaint immediately following major updates because many users depend on the additional functionality that they get from third-party components. hopes that developers will start resolving issues now so that a robust assortment of popular addons will be available in time for the 3 launch.

An announcement posted in the Developer Center urges developers to get started and provides important information about changes in the addon versioning system. Version numbers in 2 are composed of four individual numbers separated by dots (the current version is 2.0.0.11). In 3, the versioning will only use three numbers, and extension install.rdf files will have to be written accordingly. Extensions that are hosted somewhere other than addons..org will also now require a secure update channel to protect against man-in-the-middle attacks.

For additional information about updating addons for 3, see the documentation in the Developer Center.
